  1. Similarly, “valet” can be pronounced /ˈvælɪt/ or /ˈvæleɪ/ (vow-lit or vow-lay). It wasn’t until I heard Marilyn Monroe say “vow-lit” in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” that I became aware of this. But whereas I’d always heard the word pronounced “vow-lay,” I’ve always uttered the word as a French person would (“va-LAY” ).
