My brother, the gladiator …
At bedtime, my brother, Jerome,
Tells how he slayed lions in Rome.
It’s always the same.
But he’s not to blame.
We live in a one-story home.

A HOOK IN THE EYE
Behind the wheel of a classic Pontiac
Hot rod and reel, Mississippi maniac
Beneath a mackerel sky
Got a hook in the eye
Beware the lures of the man from Frontenac
He’s got brochures and a fishing almanac
Knows how to plan a fish fry
Got a hook in the eye
Be fishing soon with his angle of attack
The shuttered moon flees a sky that fades to black
But whether rainy or dry
Got a hook in the eye
Begins to fish way beyond the beaten track
Then makes a wish that the dawn will never crack
Yeah, he’s a crazy old guy
Got a hook in the eye

Fair and square …
A fair-minded pimp in St. Cloud, Minnesota
That locals describe as a “street menace” owed a
Small debt to some men.
He paid it, and then
He bought his ten “street walking women” a soda!

Don’t it make your brown skies blue …
The smog here last week was as thick as fondue!
A deep chocolate brown that you couldn’t see through!
And then some clean air
Blew in from somewhere
And pushed out the smog. Now the sky’s a deep blue!

Checkout counter …
I went to the market with Marilyn Grimes.
“I’ve fallen,” she said, “on some mighty hard times!
I like my bread rye,
So that’s what I’ll buy.
They’d better accept pennies, nickels, and dimes!”

Body Shop Ding-a-Ling …
“So who do you trust? You’re so right! Fender King!
A dent in your fender? That’s not a big thing…”
He started to swing
His hammer and sing.
He sang, “Gimme dat, lady! Gimme dat ding!”
